and the winning answer!

The winner of our second "What Is It-Where Is It?" contest is Christopher McMahan of Swannanoa. Christopher correctly and interestingly identified the three photos as follows:
- Photo #1 is a memorial located in front of the Swannanoa Fire department in honor of our old "fire" dog Dottie who passed away some time ago.
- Photo #2 is a statue of a cat which sits in front of the vet's office across from New Age Garden Center on Highway 70.
- Photo #3 is a dog statue that sits in front of the same vet's office.
FOOTNOTES to this contest: Now we know that the Swannanoa Fire Department previously had a Dalmatian named Dottie. Perhaps the Fire Department could fill us in on some more history of this dog.
Did you know the Fire Department currently has a Dalmatian named Ashes? Ashes is a gentle, friendly greeter who is curious about visitors at the station.
AND NOW FOR THE BIG QUESTION!!!! What on earth has happened to the statue of the cat which sat in front of the Swannanoa Valley Animal Hopsital (the vet's office)? Since we ran this contest, the cat statue is no longer there. The dog still stands all alone. Perhaps someone from the Animal Hospital can let us know. Here's what they looked like..

While we received several really great answers to the questions "What Is It, Where Is It?" in regards to the photo shown above, Robert Brown of Swannanoa submitted the winning entry with his response: "The photo is of the Samuel Davidson Trail marker on the Warren Wilson hiking trail south of the College. This marker shows the way to Sam's grave and tells the story of his sojurn and demise."
As a footnote, this photo deserves some additional explanation. Should you come across this trail marker at the top of Jones Mountain, please note that Samuel Davidson's grave and gravestone can no longer be reached from that point. Since this marker was erected by a Boy Scout Troop many years ago, several homes have been built on private property and these block the trail to the grave. The property owners do not allow any trespassing in order to reach the site. It is our hope that access will eventually be granted so that folks can once again visit this historic monument which is an integral part of our Swannanoa Valley heritage.
