  •  First Fridays at 6:00 pm - Traditional Music and Dance,
September 3 and October 1, 2010

The monthly traditional music and frolics continue Fridays at 6:00 p.m. on Railroad Street in Beacon Village behind the main Swannanoa Fire Station. Admission is free and all you will need to bring are your dancing shoes and a chair.

There will be BINGO brought to you by the Swannanoa Babe Ruth Softball/Baseball League. Proceeds are to benefit the children with uniforms, equipment and scholarships.


As always, great food and beverages are available for purchase including a lemonade stand, ice cream and hot dogs. And don’t miss the big hit from last month. Returning is Miss Stephanie from Stephanie’s Roadhouse Bistro with her famous “Chicken Waffle Wraps”!



Join in all the fun! Farmers market, Cake walks, Crafts, Contests,   BarBQ, Raffles, Pizza, and more.

Just remember to bring your own chair and No Pets Please!

         


  • Swannanoa Community Garden - Still Time for Your Fall Garden Plot!
For a nominal fee of $10, you can continue growing all those wonderful fresh fall garden vegetables. The Swannanoa Community Garden is sponsored by the Swannanoa Pride Community Coalition.You can visit their website at www.swannanoapride.org

  • The Swannanoa Business Association - Announces New Swannanoa Business Directory in the Works:
                          
Now is the time to get your free listing in the Swannanoa Business Directory. ALL businesses in Swannanoa will be listed, free of charge. If you would like to place a fabulous ad in the directory, the cost starts at $45 for a business card size (with a 10% discount on all ads for members of the Swannanoa Business Association).

This directory is available free to the public and over 1,500 copies were distributed last year. The demand has been great and an increased printing and distribution is anticipated this year. Get your listing and ad placed as soon as possible. For more information, call the Business Association at 828-337-4718 or email info@swannanoaba.com.





  • Plow Day at Warren Wilson CollegeSaturday, September 18th, 9:00 – 3:00
Plow Day is an event for draft horse farmers to gather and demonstrate the use of traditional horse drawn agriculture equipment.

Live music, draft horse demonstration, logging competitions, arts and crafts, cider making and blacksmith demonstration make for a perfect family outing.
 

So come on out, Saturday September 18th from 9am-3pm! The event will be on the Warren Wilson Farm (look for signs).The gates open for teamsters at 8am. Free for teamsters, students and kids under 15. Adults will be charged $3 per car. If you are interested in vending at this event or have any questions contact Christina Torquato at (804)514-9555.

                         





  • Bee Tree Picnic - The 131st annual Bee Tree Picnic - Saturday, September 4
The 131st annual Bee Tree Picnic will be held on Saturday, September 4, at Bee Tree Christian Church located at 1185 Bee Tree Lake Road in Swannanoa. Folks begin to gather at 10 a.m. and listen to music throughout the morning and early afternoon. Lunch is served at 12:30 p.m. There will be a quilt raffle and door prizes. The youngest, oldest, and the one who traveled the farthest to attend the picnic will be honored. Call Cindy Medlock at (828) 713-3101 for more information.


  • Community Yard Sale - Saturday, September 11th
First Presbyterian Church of Swannanoa will hold a yard and bake sale on September 11, from 8 a.m. - noon in the fellowship hall. The community is invited to attend.




  • Beacon Picnic - Saturday, September 11

Former employees of Beacon Manufacturing will gather at First Baptist Church Swannanoa on Saturday, September 11, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Please bring a covered dish.





  • Mill Around the Village Bluegrass Festival – Saturday, September 25, 11:00 – 5:00 Beacon Mill Village – Downtown Swannanoa
The 4th annual “Mill Around the Village Festival” will be held on the streets of downtown Swannanoa, North Carolina, on Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 11am – 5pm.
This year there will be Bluegrass bands playing throughout the day, several food vendors including Okie Dokie’s Smokehouse and Chow Time Pizza, many local arts and craft vendors, a large kid’s area with games and contests, and the Swannanoa Valley Museum will be back with heritage displays and tours. New to the festival this year is the Swannanoa Chili Cook-off.

  • East of Asheville Studio Tour – E.A.S.T. – October 9 & 10, 2010
This year’s Fall Tour falls on the last weekend of American Craft Week. American Craft Week is a celebration of not only the aesthetic, but the economic value of hand made American crafts. The American public is invited to recognize the wealth, and benefits hand made American crafts has, not only on our everyday lives but also on the economy. The EAST Tour is the perfect way to participate and savor the arts and crafts of this regions diverse artists in their studios.      

                                       
            
Artists of the Black Mountain, Swannanoa, and East Asheville area, present the East of Asheville Studio Tour. The studio tour takes place twice a year – Spring and Fall. Everyone is welcome to visit any or all of the studios during the tour, whether they are serious art patrons or just browsers of beautiful and interesting works.

It is a huge hit on the West Coast, and now we have it right here in Swannanoa. Stephanie serves breakfast all day and has a great Sunday Brunch.       • New Veterans Home to Be Built in Swannanoa!
      Great news for our community and for our veterans: The US Department of Veterans Affairs and the State of North Carolina have announced Federal grants for the construction of a new 100 bed residential facility for veterans here in Swannanoa.

      The US Department of Veterans Affairs has approved a $13.5 million grant for the facility in Swannanoa which is expected to cover 65% of the total cost of the project here.

      While the construction of the facility, expected to take 18 – 24 months to be completed by May 2012,  will create much needed jobs, the new veterans home will employ 150- 170 staff. Swannanoa welcomes this opportunity for new jobs in the area, and welcomes our veterans as well!
            



      • Swannanoa Fire Department Fund Raiser - The Swannanoa Fire Department Auxiliary fundraiser on April 17, 2010 was a great event. Thanks to all who came out to support our fabulous Fire Department.
